Volunteers help with all aspects of running AWS whether its helping with the cafe, running workshops, organising events, coordinating exhibitions, promoting the space or contributing ideas about its future.

We are a friendly group with a diverse skills-set who are united by a desire to see AWS flourish and promote the regeneration of Old Market. It does not matter whether you're a complete novice at running a space or you've been doing it for years we are always keen to have new people get involved.

What can you expect from volunteering?

As part of our mission to champion all that is great about Bristol, we are committing to only play CDs in our new cafe from unsigned local talent.

We accept CDs from any music genre and would love to ensure that we have lots of music playing here all the time so please do pop in to the Trinity Centre Arts West Side, or post one through the Arts West Side letterbox!

Trinity's new community arts cafe is set for a grand opening on the 31'st of march 2012. In the week running up to our opening Westside will also be hosting a photography exhibition from local artist Khali Ackford.

In preparation for our opening we will be celebrating pancake day at Westside on Tuesday 21st of February.

We are inviting local tossers to come to Westside and receive a battering.

Pancakes available from 11am till 6pm.

The small grant will help us to source café start up equipment, develop flyers and promotional material and fund training for volunteers who will help to run the space.

As part of the funding we are able to offer FREE accredited short courses in Health & Safety, First Aid, and Food Safety for volunteers who are participating in the volunteer-led café project, run by Trinity Community Arts.

There are a limited number of course places available and priority will be given to local residents and those who are committed to volunteering long-term as part of the project.

Number 6 West Street is being re-developed by Trinity to provide a hub for community and arts activities including affordable meeting and office space with reduced rates for local people and groups, a café with free wi-fi and low-cost internet access and exhibition space for local artists.

Last week, we unveiled Bristol graffiti artists Silent Hobo and Mr Riks' dynamic makeover of the front of the building. The artists have created an attention-grabbing mural depicting the cityscape of Old Market spotted with emerging butterflies and a friendly-looking pigeon!

West Street will initially be running activities on a Tuesday evening and Saturday daytime while building works are still being carried out. The full launch of the cafe with regular opening times is planned for January 2012.

Volunteer committee meetings take place every Thursday, with start times alternating each week between 4pm and 6pm. Other events taking place over the next few months include:

Excitement is building around Trinity Community Arts' latest project in the Old Market area. The new centre at 6 West Street, due to launch early November, will be a hub for community and arts activities with low-cost office space, a café with free wi-fi and exhibition space.

As part of the building's redevelopment, Bristol graffiti artists Silent Hobo and Mr Riks have just completed a dynamic makeover, painting a mural which depicts the cityscape of Old Market spotted with emerging butterflies - and a friendly looking pigeon! Covering the entire face of the building, the Bristol artists' work means 6 West Street should attract plenty of positive attention.

Silent Hobo is a traditional graffiti artist whose work featured in the 2009 Crimes of Passion Exhibition at the RWA. His characters can be seen around Bristol on walls, in community centres, pubs, libraries, train stations and at festivals. His work has been exhibited across the city and beyond.

Mr Riks is part of the Elusive Collective a group of professional graffiti artists who design graphics, murals and deliver workshops in the art form.

This year both artists took part in creating the BrisFest mural and also worked on the recent See No Evil en mass graffiti-art pop-up-gallery along the length of Nelson Street, Bristol. Both artists have also led courses for young people at the Trinity Centre in how to become a professional artist.

"We hope that our new mural will bring a new creative energy to Old Market and encourage people to take a different look at the area", says centre manager, Emma Harvey.

Our work at 6 West Street is part of a wider development plan for the Old Market area. The Old Market Community Association have been working with the Princes Foundation to lead interactive public workshop sessions exploring the key issues for local people and the vision for the future of Old Market. The sessions will culminate in a final report outlining the phased development plans to reinvigorate the high street and improve services. Recognising the exceptional potential of the Old Market area, The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment has offered their expertise and support in developing a vision for our neighbourhood.

All members of the community are invited to attend the two interactive public workshop sessions at the Marriott Hotel.

The first, public session on  25 October between 7pm-8:30om will be asking "What are the key issues for Old Market?". The second session on 27 October from 7pm-8pm will ask attendees "What is your vision for Old Market?". There will also be a third meeting on  26 October with stakeholders including the Old Market Community Association, the Village Business and Residents Association and Destination Bristol.

With generous support from Bristol City Council we have been entirely redeveloping the building, which is situated along the vibrant high street of Old Market. Old Market is not only one of the most diverse areas in the City, also one of the most historic, with over 60 listed buildings.

We want to provide a crucial information and signposting point to help people better access services. We also want to create a space where people can come, get involved and have their say, to shape the ongoing development of the area. We are working closely with local stakeholders including Destination Bristol, VBRA West (Bristol's LGBT Business Association) and the Old Market Community Association (OMCA), who are all working collectively to create a brighter future for Old Market.

Next month will see the launch of Arts West Side - a volunteer-run, community-led space. Initially we will be providing an exhibition space for local artists, meeting and activity space for community groups and a base for the OMCA so that people can find out more information about what's going on in Old Market and how to get involved. The project is totally in its infancy, so anyone getting involved will have the opportunity to shape this vibrant new community space.

We are currently exploring ways we can fund a project manager to help coordinate its use, provide support to the OMCA and develop community and arts activities. We are also looking at ideas to deliver an Old Market Heritage Project from the space, that will allow people to learn more about the area's extensive and captivating history.

We are looking for dynamic, confident, outgoing people, with an interest in community and the arts to come and be part of this unique project. Trinity to launch new site on West Street

Trinity Community Arts will be launching a dynamic new community space along the high street of Old Market in Autumn 2011.

6 West Street will be developed by Trinity to provide a hub for community and arts activities, including affordable meeting and office space with reduced rates for local people and groups, a café with free wi-fi and low-cost internet access and exhibition space for local artists.

Historic Old Market is currently undergoing significant change, welcoming new residents and businesses and developing its identity as a diverse and vibrant area. Known for its eclectic mix of traders, its vibrant lesbian and gay community and a bustling nightlife, the high street currently acts as a gateway for communities of Easton & Lawrence Hill to the Cabot Circus development and the City Centre.

Trinity Community Arts already run the Trinity Centre – a community centre and live music venue situated at the top of Old Market, providing services to Easton, Ashley and Lawrence Hill. 6 West Street will complement activities and events already happening at Trinity and around the local area.

The project is in its development phase and consultation is being carried out in order to create a multi-purpose community space where local groups can use facilities, computers and meeting space.

Emma Harvey, Centre Manager of Trinity Centre said; “This is a really exciting new project in one of Bristol's most important cultural quarters. We would love to hear from anyone with ideas for the space and interest in getting involved.”

Trinity is working closely with local partners including the Old Market Community Association, the Bristol Gay Village Business and Residents’ Association, Bristol City Council and Destination Bristol who are driving the Retail Sector Development Project. The retail project is seeking to help reinvigorate the Old Market High Street and improve the situation for its businesses.

Project Manager, Eva Stuetzenberger, said: “The new Trinity outlet will be right in the heart of Old Market, injecting new arts and culture into the life of this vibrant and diverse community. A fantastic opportunity and resource for residents, visitors and businesses alike.” The development of 6 West Street will help raise the profile and visibility of local activities and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of Old Market.

Ideas for the space include providing an information and meeting point for community and arts activities, affordable office and meeting space through the Trinity Community Initiative which provides subsidised spaces for grassroots groups and an exhibition space for local artists.
